Frequently Asked Questions
Art Therapy? What’s that?
Art Therapy is….
Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that blends creative expression with traditional talk therapy to support healing, growth, and connection. According to the American Art Therapy Association, it’s grounded in the belief that making art can help people explore emotions, develop self-awareness, manage stress, and enhance overall well-being. In our practice, we view it as an opportunity to create and connect, to use the art process as a bridge between inner experiences and meaningful change.
Isn’t it only for children?
Art Therapy is for EVERYONE! In fact, creating is one of our most natural languages. Scribbling and mark-making are among the earliest ways humans express emotion and meaning. Adults often find art therapy especially helpful for processing experiences that are hard to put into words.
How does it help?
Art therapy can support you in understanding your emotions, finding relief from anxiety or stress, exploring your identity, and reconnecting with yourself in new ways. Engaging in the creative process has also been shown to lower heart rate and cortisol levels, support the nervous system, and promote improved overall health outcomes, helping your body and mind work together toward healing.
What if I’m not good at art?
No art experience is required and no grades EVER! The focus isn’t on creating something “good” or “beautiful,” but on what you notice and feel as you create. Art therapy isn’t about skill; it’s about expression and exploration. The marks you make can become a language of their own, helping you access thoughts and emotions that words alone might not reach. Many clients are surprised by how freeing it feels to create without judgment, and how the process itself can bring clarity, calm, and connection.
What if I don’t have art materials?
Lot’s of things can be art supplies if you use your imagination. Foil, pen and paper, food coloring, paper scraps, old tee shirts, just to name a few. If you would like, we offer pre-selected art material packs that you can purchase. This gives you an opportunity to explore different materials. Enjoy a good trip to the craft aisle at your favorite store? You can also purchase supplies to your preference.
I just want to talk…
Art making isn’t required, and that’s okay! Therapy is not a one size fits all system, we understand that talk therapy has so many benefits. Many sessions naturally include both talking and artmaking, it’s all about what feels right for you. Whether you choose to create or not, our ears, minds, and hearts are open. We’ll meet you where you are, supporting your process in whatever form it takes, through words, images, silence, or reflection.
