Frequently Asked

Beginning therapy can feel like a big step, especially if you've never worked with a therapist before. Here's a simple overview of what the process looks like from your first phone call to your ongoing therapy sessions.

What to Expect When Starting Therapy

Woman with curly hair and glasses talking on a phone in a modern office, with notebooks, a laptop, and plants on a wooden desk, shelves behind, and sticky notes on a chalkboard wall.

The first step is scheduling a complimentary 15-minute consultation. During this conversation, we'll briefly discuss what you're hoping to gain from therapy, answer any questions you may have, review insurance coverage or private pay options, and determine whether we're a good fit. If it feels like the right match, we'll schedule an intake appointment at a consistent day and time that works well for both you and your therapist.

Once you've decided to move forward, we'll send you your intake paperwork through our secure client portal. These forms include important information about our practice, informed consent, office policies, and questionnaires that help us better understand your history, current concerns, and therapy goals. Completing these documents before your first appointment allows us to spend more time getting to know you and focusing on what matters most during your intake session.

After your intake session, we'll begin meeting on a consistent weekly or bi-weekly schedule based on your individual needs and goals. Together, we'll work toward the treatment plan we developed, regularly checking in on your progress and adjusting our approach as your needs evolve. Therapy is a collaborative process, and each session is tailored to support your growth, healing, and overall well-being.

03

As therapy progresses, we'll regularly review your goals, celebrate your progress, and adjust your treatment plan as your needs evolve. Whether therapy is a short-term support during a life transition or a longer journey of healing, our hope is that you leave each session feeling more empowered, connected, and equipped to navigate life's challenges.

Art Therapy? What’s that?

Art Therapy is….

Art therapy is a form of psychotherapy that blends creative expression with traditional talk therapy to support healing, growth, and connection. According to the American Art Therapy Association, it’s grounded in the belief that making art can help people explore emotions, develop self-awareness, manage stress, and enhance overall well-being. In our practice, we view it as an opportunity to create and connect, to use the art process as a bridge between inner experiences and meaningful change.

Isn’t it only for children?

Art Therapy is for EVERYONE! In fact, creating is one of our most natural languages. Scribbling and mark-making are among the earliest ways humans express emotion and meaning. Adults often find art therapy especially helpful for processing experiences that are hard to put into words.

How does it help?

Art therapy can support you in understanding your emotions, finding relief from anxiety or stress, exploring your identity, and reconnecting with yourself in new ways. Engaging in the creative process has also been shown to lower heart rate and cortisol levels, support the nervous system, and promote improved overall health outcomes, helping your body and mind work together toward healing.

What if I’m not good at art?

No art experience is required! The focus isn’t on creating something “good” or “beautiful,” but on what you notice and feel as you create. Art therapy isn’t about skill; it’s about expression and exploration. The marks you make can become a language of their own, helping you access thoughts and emotions that words alone might not reach. Many clients are surprised by how freeing it feels to create without judgment, and how the process itself can bring clarity, calm, and connection.

What if I don’t have art materials?

Lot’s of things can be used as art supplies if you use your imagination. Foil, pen and paper, food coloring, paper scraps, old tee shirts, just to name a few. If you would like, we offer pre-selected art material packs that you can purchase. This gives you an opportunity to explore different materials. Enjoy a good trip to the craft aisle at your favorite store? You can also purchase supplies to your preference.

Do I have to make art?

Art making isn’t required, and that’s okay! Therapy is not a one size fits all system, we understand that talk therapy has so many benefits. Many sessions naturally include both talking and artmaking, it’s all about what feels right for you. Whether you choose to create or not, our ears, minds, and hearts are open. We’ll meet you where you are, supporting your process in whatever form it takes, through words, images, silence, or reflection.
